Gardening Go Pro Timelapses

Today me and Becky did some much needed gardening, and I decided to test out a new timelapse idea. I've seen people use the IKEA ORDNING kitchen timer as a rotating base for their GoPros, a bit like this.

I am impressed with the quality of the results given the simplicity of the solution. I will have to use this again, but need to attach some sort of tripod to the base as my camera angles were limited. Maybe a connector for a Gorilla Pod or a standard tripod mount screw?

Bedroom almost ready, Bathroom painted

Its been just over 3 months since we moved in, and the bedroom is nearly ready. Carpet and furniture is needed, but it's already looking a million times better than the floral decoration when we moved in.

Spontaneous Bathroom Painting

While finishing off the painting we did yesterday, we suddenly decided to paint the bathroom white. The original decoration wasn't great, and just looked odd.

GoPro Timelapses: Snowman Building and Bedroom Decorating

So, I'm getting to grips with my new GoPro Hero2 in various different modes. I've shot some videos recently of the snow in Bristol, which I will edit and post on YouTube when I have the time.

Overall I'm very impressed with the camera. While the battery can be limiting, and the mic prefers to pick up the noise of the camera being handled/moved (which is hard to avoid with the way they've designed the camera to live inside a waterproof housing) over what's actually happening.

I recorded a Time Lapse last night (Friday 18th Jan 2013) of me and Becky building a snowman in our garden using 1/2 second intervals and a 32Gb Class 10 SanDisk SDHC Memory Card. Unfortunately, while this makes a nice smooth frame rate on the final video output, the GoPro can't quite keep up with the frame rate and sticks at ISO 400. This was almost useless in the dark conditions, and therefore the entire time lapse is underexposed :( Adding to this, I ended up with almost 4000 images of about 2mb each. That's a lot of data to process!

I've had to adjust the levels on all the images before compiling the individual frames into a video clip. This was pretty straightforward using the Actions and Batch Processing features in Photoshop, but took a few hours of 100% CPU on my MacBook Pro and at one point I thought it would melt!

All time lapses I record from now on will be at 2 second intervals so the GoPro can keep up, and I don't have too many images to process afterwards. This will be sufficient for things like decorating rooms in the house (which is exactly what me and Becky finished off today).

This was shot over 1 1/2 hours with the GoPro suction cup mount attached to the window in the bedroom and the GoPro plugged into my old HTC Desire USB charger (providing 5V at 1A) in case the battery went flat while recording. I really like the wide angle shot and how much activity the camera picks up. This is a million times better than the previous time lapse I recorded with my Canon IXUS 80 digital camera.

I will use a very similar setup when recording the next stage of decorating our bedroom: new carpet and moving all the furniture in!

GoPro camera fun and table hack idea

So, the new year is here and I've not done much to the house over Christmas. The main bedroom is almost ready, but we need to pick a carpet. We have everything else ready (furniture, fittings, etc).

I did add an extra security light to the garage, which is connected to a mains remote controlled switch. This means Becky can turn the light on from her car as she reverses along the dark driveway behind the row of houses (as the normal security light only gets activated once someone is outside of their car). I might hook into this remote control system in the future, either by decoding the wireless signals used or by adding a spare remote and patching its buttons into an Arduino or raspberry pi or something else.

I did however get a nice shiny GoPro HD Hero 2 camera for my birthday from Becky. After getting used to its wide angle, and the fact that it has no viewfinder, 

I've finally got some good photos of the house! I've also spent plenty of money on a WiFi BacPac add on, Class 10 32Gb SDHC memory card, and a few other bits and pieces.

 

It is going to be perfect for running a time lapse recording of me and Becky doing significant changes to a room (e.g. the main bedroom), although I have to calculate the photo interval properly. On a recent trial time lapse I recorded I set the interval for 2 seconds, and ended up with over 9,000 3mb photos! It almost filled the new memory card up! I will post completed time lapse videos and photos on here soon.

Still, there are many ideas and plans for things that can be done in 2013. One of the best ones yet was suggested by Becky. I was fed up of the amount USB cables cluttering up our coffee table when charging phones, PS3 remotes, etc. I thought of adding a USB powered hub into the IKEA LACK coffee table we have. Then Becky suggested "why not just add mains extension sockets so we can plug in our laptop chargers as well.

So, I've decided I can recess some sockets under the table (as it is mostly hollow anyway) and add some cable management hooks. A powered USB charger/hub and some spare USB cables. If I'm cunning enough I can hide all the wires in the table frame, with a power cable for the mains coming out of a table leg and under the rug/sofa.

Painting the New Bedroom 2012

So, after a month of being moved into our new house, we've got some stuff done.

We've concentrated on the bedroom so far. We've removed the built in wardrobes, stripped all the wallpaper off the walls, removed the carpet and generally cleared everything out. The crack in the wall was filled in by Becky's dad and now we're ready to get decorating!

I started some painting on Tuesday and we both finished the 3 grey walls today. I recorded a short time lapse video on my old Canon IXUS 80 but it's not ideal. I would love the fisheye field of view from a GoPro, but never mind.

The undecorating begins!

Yesterday was the first full day for me in the house. It's only taken almost 4 months since putting an offer on it to finally getting in and seeing it during daylight!

Becky spent most of the week cleaning and tidying as much as she could, and during the evenings I helped out. I will post more photos and details soon, but for now here are 2 quick photos of the master bedroom that is Job Number 1.

We dislike the floral decoration, so aim to gut the room and start from scratch. During the evenings this week we removed most of the built in wardrobes. As you can see, it already makes a difference!
All of yesterday was spent removing the last bits of wardrobe and stripping wallpaper. We also got some paint and tools from B&Q so we can start painting today! Last night we were both absolutely exhausted, but pleased with the progress so far.

We aim to get as much bedroom decoration done over the next few days, as well as move small items over to the house. Virgin media is installed tomorrow (Monday). Fridge/freezer and washing machine arrive on Tuesday. Moving larger furniture Wednesday onwards.

Lots still needs doing, but this will have to wait for a bit:

• Electrics need rewiring and a new distribution box fitted
• Gas boiler, whilst almost new and working fine, was fitted badly and needs re fitting correctly
• upgrade 3 radiators, replace 1 in the bathroom with a towel rail, and add a new one on the upstairs landing
• some cracks need filling correctly and sealing up
• lots more decorating!

A new kitchen and bathroom would be lovely, but are much further down the line.

At least we get an extra hour in bed, thanks to the end of British Summer Time! Autumn is here and winter is on its way, and we now have plenty to keep us busy over the next few years!
